Nothing Funny To Say

I wish I could adequately express in words what is lurking in my heart and in my mind. I can try, but I don't think I can do it justice.

What the *%#$@ is wrong with people? Seriously, what could possibly be so screwed up in someone's  head that it makes good sense to blow up random, innocent people? If I live to be 1000 years old, I'll never understand what motivates someone to do that.

I don't care what your religion is or isn't. I don't care who you voted or didn't vote for. I don't care what county you come from or how tough your life is. You just don't go around killing people. You just don't.

I've got problems. I bet you do too. I deal with my problems in the best way I know how and I bet you do too. I have never once considered killing someone, myself included, because my problems got the best of me. You just don't do it.

Like most people, I watched coverage of the bombings at the Boston Marathon in disbelief. I heard the grisly accounts of body parts on the street. I saw footage of the explosions. I heard about the scores of people who were injured and I heard about the dead. I heard about a little boy named Martin Richard who didn't do anything more sinister than come to watch his dad cross the finish line. He never made it home.

I wanted to cry when I heard these things. I wanted to hug my own little boy and tell him I love him and that I'll protect him from things like this. And, I'll do my best to follow through on that, but the world is a messed up place full of messed up people. I'll do my best. Not only to take care of Jack and the rest of my family, but I'll do my best to do little things to make the world a better place. It may not seem like much, but when you have lunatics running around blowing up people, BLOWING UP LITTLE CHILDREN, a small, random act of kindness can go a long way.

There are bad people in the world. Lots of them. But, you know what? There are good people, too. Lots of them. In fact, I would be willing to venture that there are more good people than bad. There will always be bad people, but they're a minority. Thank God, they're a minority.

Don't let them win. Don't give up on love, peace and goodness. I don't mean to sound like a refugee from the 60's but these are the things that we can do every day to fight the evil that lives in the shadows of this world.

And, you can pray. Pray that God, whatever version of God that you recognize, will suppress evil. Those prayers are not wasted. Those prayers do not fall on deaf ears. Those prayers can lead you and me through the darkness.

Just do something. Do something nice. Don't be part of the problem. Be part of the solution.

Well said, Martin...well said, indeed.
